JPSCo PAYG Prepaid Power islandwide heralds CONEC Mobile Wallet and Electric Charging Stations

Prepaid Electricity is finally going islandwide.

On Sunday September 11th 2016, JPS Co (Jamaica Service Public Company) is rolling out their Pay As You Go Prepaid Electricity product as reported in the article “JPS Launches Prepaid Electricity Service Islandwide”, Published Sunday September 11, 2016, The Jamaica Gleaner.

The benefits are quite obvious and compelling for switching from Postpaid to Prepaid Electricity:

1.      35% to 50% saving on their electricity bill
2.      Ability to manage their electricity costs
3.      Ability to keep track of their energy use

PAYG, which has a convenient online signup form, involves the installation of a smartmeter at your home to replaces the analog meter and has been available in other countries, namely:

1.      United States
2.      South Africa
3.      Argentina
4.      United Kingdom

Prepaid Electricity twinned with Digital smartmeters results in more accurate tracking of your electricity usage. This simply means you can't leave appliances plugged in, as they draw electricity, a phenomenon known as vampire power.

However, PAYG allows for the convenience of being able to check your electricity balance in much the same way like phone credit using their PAYG App or going to the MyJPSCo Website.

You can then choose to buy blocks of PAYG Credit to pay for your electricity using CONEC Mobile Wallet as pointed out in my blog article entitled “Why CONEC Mobile Money to pay JPS Co EBILL before Digicel Paymaster Mobile Money”.

The PAYG System also alerts customers when their balance is low to avoid them going home in the dark. Interestingly the PAYG System allows emergency top-up by calling the JPS Customer Care Centre, very similar to FLOW Lend as described in my Geezam blog article entitled “FLOW Jamaica launches FLOW Lend to allow subscriber to borrow Voucher Credit”.

More interestingly, Prepaid Power sets up the possibility for All-Electric Vehicles coming to Jamaica by JPS Co having Charging stations which you pay for using your PAYG smartphone App as described in my blog article entitled “How US$5 million JPSCo smart meter rollout means CONEC Mobile Money for Tesla Motors Charging Stations”.

Interesting times ahead for Jamaica as it relates to Mobile Money and All-Electric Vehicles, as this is the perfect storm to jumpstart theses advanced services.
