Google seems to be very serious about making Google Glass the next
smartphone replacement by going with an American Optometrist, VSP Global as a
partner to make their product go mainstream as stated in “Google
in Talks to Create Prescription Lenses, Designs for Google Glass”,
published Nov. 22, 2013 5:52 p.m. ET by Theo Francis and Rolfe Winkler, Wall Street Journal.
This is the very thing I had predicted in my blog article
entitled “Google
Glass Designer Isabelle Olsson puts Leopard frames on Google Glass - Smart +
Sexy = Smexy glasses Katy Perry Roar for Tablet and smartphone Extinction”
as they’ve already made a mark on the Runway, albeit more Nouveau Geek than prêt a
porter. Either that or they’re taking suggestions from my blog again!
Google has now partnered with VSP Global, an American Eye Care Provider
and Insurer to recommend Google Glass to Americans when next they go to their
optometrist to have their prescriptions filled as noted in the article “Google
Glass may have found a prescription lens partner”, published November 22,
2013 11:10 AM PST by Seth Rosenblatt, CNET News.
Why is this big news? Google intends to have VSP Global do the following
to promote Google Glass:
1.
Train optometrists to fit Google Glass for
patients
2.
Developing prescription lenses that accommodate
the wearable computer's prism
3.
Making more fashionable frames for Glass
Hopefully too, they’ll make Google Glass a little less bulky and at least
be packing some Solar Panels like the ones in these Ray-Ban Sunglasses designed
by Sayalee Kaluskar as described in the article “Solar-panel
sunglasses recharge your iPhone in the evening”, published November 16,
2013 4:54 PM PST by Tim Hornyak, CNET News,
that’d make the glasses a lot less bulky.
Coupling the Google Glass to any smartphone thereby providing an
extension to the smartphone screen would make it easier for persons filling a
prescription to opt in. This as it would mean you’d get your prescription glasses
that are not only stylish but also functional as an AR (Augmented Reality)
extension of you smartphone or Tablet. This development, albeit basic on the
surface, is one to watch!
If I’m reading the Tea Leaves right, that means the future of smartphones
may eventually be smaller pocket sized devices with no screens that merely have
the Glasses as a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Direct connected extension of the
smartphone. A perfect replacement for the Smartphone that’ll see many Americans
Frozen (2013) standing staring
in space instead of down into a screen!
